What is multiple sclerosis?
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an inflammatory disease that affects the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord). The symptoms of this chronic disease are varied: visual, motor, sensory, urinary and cognitive. They can evolve and depend on the location of the lesions in the brain and spinal cord.
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an inflammatory disease affecting the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord).
It is characterized by the development of an inflammatory reaction against myelin in the central nervous system, the sheath that protects nerve fibers in the brain and spinal cord. It also affects the nerve cell extensions (axons) that make up these fibers.
A central nervous system deficiency
Multiple sclerosis most often begins with an attack, during which signs and symptoms appear rapidly and then disappear in whole or in part. It may recur at short or long intervals, once or several times. Symptoms are varied: visual, motor, sensory, urinary and cognitive, and depend on the location of lesions in the white matter of the central nervous system.
It's a chronic disease, meaning that once contracted, it will stay with you for the rest of your life, which will be of normal longevity.
